Training remains an important element of professional development so that employees stay current with expected practices, skills and company missions. Training can welcome new employees, update current employees and help employees transition to new responsibilities and positions. Preparing employees for training ensures that the training is well received and effective.
Identify the goals and intended outcome for training. When employees understand the specific reasons for attending sessions, including projected financial savings, reduction of workplace accidents or streamlining processes, they are more involved in the process. Knowing that trainings have targeted goals with real-world application in the workplace will help employees prepare for the information presented.
Solicit questions, comments and concerns from employees prior to planning all details for the training. Accomplish this by distributing an "expectations questionnaire" so employees can list thoughts confidentially. This helps employees prepare by taking inventory of their understanding of current policies. Incorporating discussion points contributed by employees also generates interest, because employees will see relevance connecting training points to their jobs
Photocopy, email or otherwise distribute training materials for employees to review prior to the training. Preparing employees with materials before the training begins allows them time to come up with additional questions and feedback. Trainees who are nervous about attending the sessions will feel more at ease knowing what will be covered during the training.
Some excellent resources are avaliable online for your employees to review and explore. Encouraging your employees to be proactive in training and education will make for a very successful department at your facility.
